About the vegan wine
It is not a marginal phenomenon or a fad.
The vegetarian and vegan food purchases are in constantly growing. And The phenomenon concerns also the wine.
Among consumers of cruelty-free foods ("strong" term but widely shared among vegans) there are, in fact, even many wine lovers.
In this regard, first of all we must know that, for the purposes of certification of the product, the production of vegan wines and vegetarian is not governed by law.
At the time, to certify a vegan wine there are essentially two ways:
- self-certification by the winemaker;
- external certifiers, which release a specific logo to be affixed on the label in
order to identify the product as "vegan wine".
But in any case it is voluntary certifications.
The major difference being that the external certifier companies are authoritative organisms (often the same companies are also authorized to issue certificates of "organic wine" by the competent autorities) and, in order to certify the product as "vegan wine", they issued the own disciplinary which winemakers must comply. In addition, they conduct regular checks, also without notice, regarding the observance of their standards.
From the companies committed to certify vegetarian and vegan food products, including wine, we learn that:
- A food for the production of which they have not been used animal-derived
substances obtained by sacrifice or mistreatment of animals is a "vegetarian
- A vegan food instead excludes the use of any animal-derived substance, in
absolute terms,regardless of the conditions of life of the animals. And this
exclusion not only affects the production cycle in the strict sense but also extends
to the materials needed for its commercialization (labels, packaging, etc.).
In the case of a wine, to give a concrete example, if they have been used:
- manure in the vineyard;
- substances like the gelatin or egg albumin to make limpid the wine;
- and even if the glue for labels contains animal derivatives
that product is not a "vegan wine".
Characteristics and prices of vegan wines available for purchase, are present in the pages dedicated to each product. Brief notes about the sensory experiences of those who have tasted vegan wine, are among the feedback shared by some customers.
